John believes they will stay there until 1 March but complains that he "enlisted for something els[e] than lying in camp and doing nothing." He is quite well and has gained twenty pounds since they went into camp. Henry is teaching at the same school as he did last winter. Signed with the rank of Lieutenant.Written at Camp Wood.

sister [Sophia Parrott] He is camped near the junction of the Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis, and Charleston Rail Road. "[T]he Army is being divided up and distributed over the country to guard the Points already in our possession" because "there are Guerrilla Parties all through the country" and 'it will be necessary to put a stop to such work before the main Army can advance any farther with safety." He believes that it is "safe to conclude that active operations have ceased" and they will have a chance to recruit men for the regiments. Signed with the rank of Captain.

Porter writes to John's father on his behalf. He reports that both Henry and John are well. Henry was not wounded at Perrysville, "he and his comrades withstood the storm of Iron hail like veterans," though his regiment lost many men. John sends word that he will write himself as soon as he has time. Porter praises John as both a friend and a soldier.

sister [ Margaret Parrott] John would like to stay in camp through the winter but resolves to accept any marching orders they receive. He is glad that she is going to school and will be a teacher for an education "is the best thing you can have to get through the world." He is sorry that Sophia is still ill. He would like her to come to Illinois when the war is over.

He is happy to hear that she is feeling better. The "rebels have a large force at Murfreesboro" and his regiment will likely move there. He was nearly killed supporting a battery of artillery in a fight that lasted over four hours.

John describes the Battle of Murfreesboro, reassuring his sister that he and Henry were unhurt. "[T]he battle lasted 4 ½ days…my company were on picket when the fight commenced and 16 of them were taken prisoners…."

He "lost nearly all my company in the fight…I have been engaged in looking up their friends and let[t]ing them know what has become of them." He is not well but will stay with the army as long as he can for he thinks "it is going to take every man we can raise to put this rebel[l]ion down." Henry is well and they see each other often.

sister [Sophia Parrott] He is glad that she is improving. Eight to ten thousand men are building five forts and when they are finished "this place will be the strongest Fortified p[l]ace in Tenn[essee]." There are skirmishes nearly every day. A shell came very close to taking his head off but he heard it coming in time to jump off his horse and the shell passed across his saddle. He has had command of the regiment since the battle of 31 December and has heard from some of his men taken prisoner then.

sister [Margaret Parrott] John is proud of his sister and he reminds her to be respectable and honorable, for he wants her to feel equally "as good as those who are we[a]lthy…And if you conduct yourself properly you will soon be a great deal more respected than some of those who look on you with scorn…honesty and industry are the shurest capital any person can have." He believes he will be well enough to rejoin the army soon.

father [C. Parrott] He is going to join the regiment next Monday. He is married and gives news that his wife is going to New York to stay with family. He may resign if his health does not improve but stands "on the top of the pile here now and I intend to keep there." He sent a notice of his marriage to his father and invites him to put in the local paper if he so wishes.

father [C. Parrott] John has been back "in Dixey" for about a week. They are guarding a pontoon bridge and he explains what one is to his father. "Boats are anchored in the River and stringers placed from one boat to another and covered with plank[s]." His regiment has only one year left to serve and he hopes "the war will be over by that time." He relates how popular he and Henry are in Illinois and describes the parties the townspeople had for his wedding. He plans to settle in Sterling, Illinois and start a business.
