re: Eldredge writes to his friend Clement, saying he feels sorry for him because Carolina, the focus of Clement's attention, left him for another man. He also writes about camp life, remarking about the daily drilling routine, and saying that his favorite duty is picket duty because he was able to go "up to a house near the line and sleep in a warm comfortable bed." However, he warns, "but if they should find it out I would get a lesson."

to sister He says there is nothing new to report except the arrival of more troops. One of the soldiers in Company C deserted and will either run to the "secesh camp" or be shot if he returns. He praises Colonel Wyman for his character, saying "for my part, I like him better every day." There are many ships in the shipyard, including a cigar company boat that is being used by the military. He received a letter from Wallace [his brother who enlisted in the Mass. 22nd], and Wallace is in good spirits. Numbered in pencil "18." Written at Camp Hamilton.

to mother [Ann Smith] The regiment is now under the command of General McClellan. General Wool has stepped down. He says Wool was starting to show his age. They have no orders to go yet, but it seems to be coming soon. Col. [Peirce] is a "disgrace to the state, and the service" as he marches the men too hard in dangerously hot weather. Peirce was court-martialed but was returned to duty. Smith seems optimistic about the Union's battles. Numbered in pencil "81."

Asa requests the return of a contraband cook by the name of George Washington who left the 25th Michigan under persuasion of officers from the 5th Ohio. [On the same piece of paper is the return letter.] 1863/10/18 Seargon, NJ, Colonel Commily to Asa W. Slayton Commily found George Washington among the 50th brigade. He vows to send him back on the first train in Munfordville. Expresses willingness to arrested the Captain who was harboring Washington and offers Slayton the opportunity to press charges, as he will send the captain to Lamillla for trial.

Title: [Sentence of court martial on Captain Eliphalet Thorp]

Thorp was tried for "abusing and plundering Margaret Weyman" and found not guilty of abuse but guilty of theft. The theft was made because Thorp had property stolen from him by Margaret's husband, who was "a vile Tory." Thorp was admonished. General Wooster approved the sentence in a short, signed note at the bottom.

Received a letter from them last night. Generally, when they mail a letter on a Monday, it arrives on a Thursday. Is happy to read their letters no matter how long they are. Is no longer working for the General Court Martial. The division headquarters has moved to Sandusky, Ohio along with two more brigades. Now will return to doing work with the company. When the court martial comes back, he can have the job again. Asks them to send the boots down to camp as soon as they are ready. Received a letter and a package containing tobacco, paper, and envelopes. Was almost out of envelopes, but had enough paper "to last me a month." Hopes he will be able to write a lot during the summer. Now has enough paper to write for the next two months. So many things are being sent to Washington that he had to give up his own tent. Has built summer quarters with a friend named William H. Averell from Conway. Will not have to do picket duty again until he returns to his company. A provost guard is never supposed to be near the front, so they will be all the way in the rear during battles…

Time is flying by. Will be home in just over 16 months. Expects the next 4 months of battles will "till loudly on our regiment." They have often been part of the reserves in a battle, and therefore expects to be put in the front line more often this year. Used to feel lucky when put in reserve, but no longer feels that way.
