Says if he won't take an oath he is to be sent to the "Common Goal." Is initialed "J.M."

Marching for White Plains, and hopes to winter in New England. The British are in New York, though they are expected to decamp soon. The French have a great deal of shipping in New York and "tease" the British. Hears the town of Taunton, Massachussets, from where just was, is now offering a fifty pound bounty for Continental soldiers, and asks her to go and collect it for him. Letter is addressed to himself, but was clearly intended for his wife, Hannah Ball. The first line reads "Dear wife."

Record of the court martial trial of Sergeant Samuel Shattuck. Lists other men set to stand trial, and gives details of Shattucks case. Includes tesstimony of two witnesses who testified that Shattuck knowingly left the service before his time was up. Also states that he was convicted of mutiny and desertion, and punished with a reduction in rank and lashes. States that Captain Moses Greenleaf was the "Judge and Advocate" in the case, and that Major Moses Knap was the President. Verso signed by Greenleaf. Marked "triplicate." Jonathan Trumbull Jr. communicates a request from George Washington asking Knox to send a copy of the information Washington is to incorporate into a letter to Governor of Virginia Thomas Nelson. Washington also wants a list of the cannons Knox proposed be sold to reimburse William Ross. Possibly concerns indemnification for impressed supplies needed for the siege of Yorktown. Washington recently wrote a letter to the Governor of Maryland under similar circumstances (see GLC02437.01273). Trumbull was Washington's military secretary. Knox's reply appears in GLC02437.01286.

Jonas was accused of participating in the Philadelphia Mutiny of June 1783, an anti-government protest by nearly 400 soldiers of the Continental Army (see GLC02437.02609 for a related letter). Knox advises Simonds that former officers should procure farms. States that if land cannot be gotten cheap in the more settled areas, to move to less settled land. Believes that "industry in such a situation is honorable as well as profitable and productive of much peace of mind."
