He was detailed and had to leave the 79th to work a twelve pound brass cannon in the 20th Ohio Battery. He does not feel in any more danger as "I can dodge a shell or canon ball some times but a musket ball I can not." The battery consists of two brass cannon and four rifle cannon. With note to Phebe Jane Walker on verso re: ballad composed in honor of Joseph Walker.

Tolstoy critiques Herron's book, "The Christian State." He agrees with Herron's view of Christianity as a "politic and economic doctrine." He was especially struck by Herron's "denunciation of the American people for not having fulfilled its vocations." He disagrees with Herron's handling of Church and State, accusing the author of "pouring old wine into new bottles."

Waugh deplores changes in the church (from Vatican II) that boast of "Renewal," but notes that the Church has survived harder times.

Writes that Captain Harland has shared that he believes General Burnside is attempting to join the division with another group of "loyal men" on land. Harland believes that the time the division is spending on board the two boats is meant to give the other group of soldiers a chance to organize and prepare for their arrival.
