Notes that a limit on the amount of words might make writing the article more difficult.

A friendly letter of introduction, revealing the intimacy between the Adams and Rush families. Adams was introducing Reverend Coleman, who was going to Washington to carry the presidential electoral votes from Massachusetts and to vacation as well. She believes they will get along well. Quotes William Cowper to describe him. Writes that her husband's hands hurt from the cold and from previous letter writing and that he sends his greetings. In GLC02852, John Adams uses "Colman" instead of "Coleman."

Webster mentions books he has received from Messrs. Bull & Co., and so no longer requires from Silliman. Asks Silliman to look for other specific books. Webster also mentions the majority by which Jonathan Trumbull had won the recent Connecticut gubernatorial election. Addressed to Silliman in England. Address leaf contains the note that this is a duplicate letter sent by the ship Polly. These books helped Webster in compiling his 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language. Two black and white bust engravings of Webster included.

Written in camp near Knoxville. General Hazen replies to a letter from Southwick, in Albany, New York. Writes, "I am greatly pleased that the Subject of the Genls. of the Old Federal Army will at last receive the attention it deserves. Genl. Moses Hazen of that Army, was a brother of my great grandfather, and resided upon Grand Isle in lake Champlain, which island he owned." Refers Southwick to Mrs. Moore, of Plattsburgh, New York, and [Doct?] Satterlee, of the Army, stating that these individuals may be able to provide him with further information on Moses Hazen.

The front page of this issue is a drawing of the commanding officers at Fort Sumter, less than a month before an attack on the fort would begin the hostilities of the Civil War. The news focuses on the Union forts that have already been turned over to the South and on Sumter, where a stalemate is underway. There is an illustration of a steam boat. The issue also contains a number of chapters from Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations" in their earliest American publication. The story is accompanied by a number of illustrations by John McLenan.
