Typed caption on verso reads: "Southwest view of Andersonville Prison, Ga., photographed from the Branch in summer of 1864. Sink or trough in the foreground, and further on are ragged tents, in an out of which are prisoners. Clothing is thrown over their tents. The dark spot in the centre is a hole or well dug by prisoners while attempting to escape by tunnelling. In this distance is the Stockade, with sentry stands and sentries, also the "Sentinel Tree," outside, on the left."

This Confederate prison was situated on Carey Street, and was originally a stron old brick warehouse, until it was converted into a prison. Startling stories are told of expereinces, suffering and starvation, endured by many Union soldiers once confined in this gloomy building during the war."
