"The North Carolina regiment (colored), are to be paid off to morrow, it seems all the pay they are now entitled to is seven dollars. I think this is altogether too little. They work harder than any other troops, and should receive the same pay."

They believed the British would attack but they landed on Staten Island instead, where they were "received with a hearty welcome by its rascally Tory inhabitants."
