Knox, Commander at West Point, confirms receipt of a letter from Washington in which Washington ordered "a suspension of the troops and stores destined to the Western posts." Reports that there are French refugees in the vicinity of West Point under the direction of a Major Merlet, "who have drawn about one hundred rations to day for men women and children." Relates that Major [Caleb] Gibbs and the Second Massachusetts Regiment will arrive at West Point the same day this letter is written (Gibbs had traveled with his detachment to Philadelphia). Offers to send Armistead (Colonel Franck S. Armistead), if Broadfoot needs reinforcement. Has been anxious about Broadfoot's health. Written on Headquarters Reserve, North Carolina stationery.

Notes, "Her mother, who is with her is a sister of Mrs. G and of Brig Genl. J.D. Stevenson of the Union Army. As they are now without a male protector I beg that you see that they are not harmed." Remarks, "There are five sisters residing together- & no one to help them or give them advice- I will answer for their doing nothing prejudicial in any way to our cause." Enemy gunboats attacked, trying to reach New Orleans, then retreated. Writes of "another turn at the Enemy today - six gun boats and four frigates having come up to point of woods below. All gone back again, and well." Written to his wife in New Orleans. Johnson K. Duncan was a Confederate Brigadier General in command of the coastal defenses that protected New Orleans, including Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip.
