Title: to Robert Livingston, Jr. re: men for the iron works

Philip expresses some concern regarding an affair with Captain Arthur and the Sherrif, and fears he may be expected to pay some money as a result. He also discusses his difficulty in finding men to work at the newly constructed iron works, and how frustrating it is to see the new works left idle. Pages 2 & 3 are another letter dated 19 October 1742. Philip expresses joy and relief at the news of Capt. Boyd's escape from the enemy and subsequent arrival in Amsterdam. He also mentions his fear of a war with the French, especially since the frontiers are open and particularly vulnerable…

Philip expresses sorrow at the death of his son Peter's daughter, and sends his condolences to Robert, Jr. He mentions some frustration with his trading agents, who are not getting the best prices for his goods, and expresses some disappointment with the recent voyages of the Oswego. Philip also requests that Robert, Jr. find out if his brother John has any money that needs to be handed over to him.

Title: Indenture of apprenticeship with Robert Livingston, Jr., merchant

The indenture sets the terms of John Reid, Jr.' s apprenticeship with Robert Livingston, Jr. to learn the trade of a merchant for 5 years. It commands Reid to obey his master's every command, to maintain his secrets and confidence, and to abstain from marriage (among other things) during the course of his apprenticeship. Philip states that he is in great need of a founder for the iron works, and explains how much trouble the entire venture has been. He also asks Robert, Jr. to sell his bread and flour in the West Indies if at all possible, as he greatly desires cheap rum and molasses.

Philip states that he will be lighting the furnace in a week, and asks if Robert, Jr. needs anything made. He remarks that he will need someone to act as clerk and stove keeper at the furnace, and gives some suggestions for loading the Jamaica Packet. P.3 is a "Memorandum for moulds for Cart boxes."

Preceded by a copy of a letter from 17 May 1744, in which DeWitt writes that the Oswego has arrived safely at Charlestown, S.C. In the current letter, DeWitt states that he will check on the Oswego's cargo, which has unfortunately arrived at a poor time. Docketed on address leaf.

Philip explains that he is awaiting the construction of a forge at the Manor, and states that the iron works will be a most profitable enterprise if it is well managed. He also expresses his regret for a hurricaine in Jamaica that ruined many ships, and hopes that his flour made it safely ashore.
