Washington asserts the constitutional authority of the federal government during the Whiskey Rebellion. Written by GW's secretary Bartholomew Danbridge, on Washington's personal stationery, extensively corrected by Washington and signed by him at the end. Over 210 words struck by GW and 157 added. With docketing by John Jay on the verso of the last page.

Letter discusses Fanny's children's health and schooling, and a possible suitor named Tobias Lear, who was Washington's secretary. In regard to the Whiskey Rebellion in western Pennsylvania, she notes that "The insurgents in the back country has carr[i]ed matter[s] so high that the President has been obliged to send a larg[e] body of men to settle the matter."

Written by Hamilton as an appendix to his Public Credit report and issued six weeks later. He recommended raising duties on imported liquor and enacting an excise tax on domestic Whiskey. (This tax eventually led to the Whiskey Rebellion).

This document explicates the taxes to be imposed on spirits within the United States. These excise taxes sparked the Whiskey Rebellion. Approved specifically by George Washington, as President, John Adams, as Vice President, and Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg, as Speaker of the House of Respresentatives. Partly printed document signed by Clymer as Supervisor of the Revenue for the district of Pennsylvania attests that the duties had been paid on "one Puncheon of Rum containing one hundred & fifteen gallons..." Marked "No. 3294." Clymer served as Pennsylvania's collector of excise taxes from 1791-1794, and was in the post when the Whiskey Rebellion broke out in western Pennsylvania.

This document is a May 1793 account signed by Treasurer Henry Jackson with lists of payments to and from "The Officers of the Massachusetts Line". Along with this document is a note citing a payment of 214 dollars, "subscribed by a number of officers of the Line" to General William Hull. The general had been appointed by his fellow officers in the spring of 1792 to press a memorial to Congress requesting further compensation for Revolutionary War veterans. The note is attached to the debit report with a wax seal. These documents are stored in Size 1, Box 31.

Reminds Knox of a meeting the two men had in Boston in which they discussed Tyler's "disagreeable circumstance of...being prosecuted by Mr. John Lee the collector of the United State's revenue for Penoscot district." Tyler asked Knox to speak to the Secretary of the Treasury (Alexander Hamilton). Tyler is fighting charges that he did not properly pay duties on rum and sugar.
