Tells his mother about the temperance book Aunt Jane sent to Cousin James, which was passed along to him. The boys in the guard make fun of him for reading the book, but he doesn't mind as he has gotten used to the teasing. Tells her that he wishes his brother Theodore could go home and help, and that he would be a better worker now that he has been a soldier. Confides to her that he does not like soldiering, and never has: "I must put up with it, and get along the best I can, till the time comes for me to go home." Written in graphite.

A man comes along and asks for whiskey; describes his practices of "prescribing" whiskey. Comments that though his accommodations are fine, he wishes he were home with friends. Says he is glad he enlisted for three years instead of nine months, as the nine month enlistees have some disgrace attached to them. Anticipates news from Charleston, hoping that if Charleston falls, and they can take Mobile "the Rebs will have to cave."

On the march from Charlestown, Maryland to Berryville, Virginia there was a great amount of rain and the roads became extremely muddy. Once the Union Army arrived in Berryville they drove off the rebels there by firing their artillery. The troops had no tents and had to sleep on the cold ground while it rained. The regiment has taken thirty prisoners with their equipment, arms, and horses.

Writes from Camp Jones that he is currently on furlough. Writes that due to the negligence of the officers, the men are still at Camp Jones with nothing to do. Reports that John Hardman, a man in his company, died from bad whiskey and excessive heat. Says that he is able to go into the city on mail business and return at his leisure, but finds Philadelphia to be a disagreeable place. Will send money home once he is paid. Most of the men are present at camp with a few exceptions. Those that do not return by tomorrow will be considered deserters.
