Advises citizens not to form groups of military resistance as it will only result in further devastation.

His list of items captured includes three pieces of artillery, battle flags, a wagon train, ambulances, and over 400 prisoners. He is pursuing the enemy, with hopes of catching Early. Custer's loss was slight. Written in pencil, "One mile beyond Waynesboro Town."

Grant, Commander in Chief of the United States Army, writes to Stanton, Secretary of War. Relates his receipt of a dispatch from General Foster (possibly John Gray Foster), describing the capture of Savannah, Georgia "with artillery, munitions of War, railroad Cars and cotton." Referring to Confederate General William Joseph Hardee, writes "I wish Hardee's fifteen to eighteen thousand of a garrison could have been added to the other captures. It is a good thing the way it stands and the country may well rejoice over it." Marked at the top as "Cipher."

Second page includes a copy of a note from Hazen, in the hand of Samuel Shaw, reading "to 29 rounds per man - 1404 dozen Cartridges / 150 priming wires."
