Wirz seeks information to implicate "the authorities at Richmond" on conditions at Andersonville, suggesting that he is being prosecuted so that "the big men, such as Cooper Seddon, Jeff Davis" can be prosecuted. Indicates that providing such information "I think it will save me, at any rate you." Passed to Winder's nearby prison cell, with Winder's unsigned autograph reply in pencil: "I knew of nothing except the reports from the prison, the reports of inspecting officers & newspaper statements." Written on scrap of lined paper.

Wirz's hanging is not mentioned but the date of admission is 10 November 1865, the day he was hanged at the Old Capital Prison. Small yellow printed card. The name of the bearer has been scratched out.

Includes several letters, an Andersonville wallet, biscuit in a tin, Libby Prison drawing, hand-carved bone kerchief slide, bone snuff box, cane, etc. Richard B. Winder served as Quartermaster throughout the Civil War. He was a cousin of Gen. John H. Winder and was implicated in the mistreatment of prisoners at Andersonville Prison.

Polished bone kerchief slide, etched on front "J. H. Kearsing, Andersonville Prison, 1864." On the back exterior of the ring is etched "Co. D 43rd N.Y.S.V." Kearsing was a prisoner in Andersonville.

Atop the metal tin, which held the biscuit, is a descriptive tag: "Brought From the Rebel Prison at Andersonville, Ga. by William Hersey of the 35th Regiment M.V.M. [Massachusetts Volunteer Militia] March 1865. Presented by G. N. Patten March 21 - 1865." The tin is 7 cm in diameter and 3 cm high. The biscuit is approximately 6.2 x 2.3 cm.

Wooden cane with a polished handle and an engraved metal label wrapped around it that reads: "Presented to Peter Quinn by Albert Mason a comrade and tent mate at Andersonville Prison, 1864." Quinn died at Andersonville on 8 October 1864.

Title: [Advertisement for A Narrative of the Captivity & Providential Escape of Mrs. Jane Lewis]

Illustrated publication advertisement for a recently published book about Lewis experience as a captive of Chief Black Hawk during the Black Hawk War. Published in the aftermath of the war after Black Hawk was taken as a captive on a tour for the United States. The advertisement refers to the tour. An unrelated poem is printed on verso: "The Factor's Garland, or The Turkish Lady." Date inferred from the publication year of Lewis' narrative.

Includes 19-page narrative of capture details, 2 letters to Edmund Randolph pleading for help, etc. Burnham was captain of the ship "Hope." Collection includes lists of goods and monies owed to various parties in the Mediteranean and also suggestions of how to best bring about peace with the Ottoman Empire (i.e. get France's help.) Also included is a folder of 9 letters grouped under the title "Papers relating to the Pension of Captain Burnham, an Algerine Prisoner."

Asks the number of delegates Knox believes will be necessary to handle the business at the meeting. Believes it more convenient if Knox were to handle the whole business himself. Mentions it has been reported that Gov. [Arthur] St. Clair and Major [Winthrop] Sargent have been taken by Indians.

"On public service" written on address leaf with no signature.

Tells Lincoln he has the pleasure of sending Count D'Estaing and that he will do his utmost to join the Count with his detachment of calvary. He relates that he transmits photographs (not included), and hopes to receive photographs of Mrs. Lebert and Octavia in return. Refers to Captain B., who regrets not being able to return to Mobile, Alabama. He reports that the ship Monitor sank in the Charleston Harbor during a gale two nights before. Notes already in Past Perfect said this document is from the papers of Ezekiel Williams, which could not be confirmed from the collateral files. But the content of the letter makes Williams a likely recipient. Wolcott says he forgot to mail a previous letter requesting a list of prisoners.
