Written as Senator from Pennsylvania to his friend Edward Gazzam. Buchanan's delaying tactics the following year as Secretary of State under Tyler allowed the president to ask for a declaration of war against Mexico. A portion of the letter on p. 1 was removed by cutting, probably by Buchanan. With free frank.

Lincoln speech at Republican State Convention, printed in the New-York Herald Tribune, vol. XVII no. 877. Speech appears on page 3 under the section "Republican Principles", titled "Speech of Hon. Abraham Lincoln, of Illinois, at the Republican State Convention, June 16, 1858." This early printing shows the national attention Lincoln received for the speech of June 16, despite his loss to Douglas. Greeley endorses the speech in an editorial on page 4.

The letters begin with his recruitment camp (Camp Siegel) in September 1862, and end with the election, just after the fall of Atlanta at Kingston, Georgia, on 8 November 1864. He concludes with news of acquaintances and his nephew, and sends with Mrs. Washington his best wishes for the new year.

Jamison writes to thank Livingston for his news on the Indian situation, claiming "We hear from Boston there is little prospect of any warr this Summer" and his hopes that this is a sign of things to come. He also writes of the Assembly elections, "if we carry it [at Exeter] & at Albany we shall have the majority" and news from Capt. Vetch who informed the intermediary that there was "no embargo nor warr" preventing news from entering into New York or Boston. Docketed on address leaf.

Written on Herald Tribune stationery to Parmelee, an attorney in New Haven, Connecticut. Marked "private." Salutation reads: "Friend Parmelee." Speaks of the impossibility of a Democrat being elected president in 1872. Notes a Democrat being elected is as unlikely as Parmelee offering presidential candidate and feminist George Francis Train $10,000 to take the vice presidential nominee for the Democratic party.
