Two letters written to his family. In the first letter to his mother, Harvey, and George, Epperly writes to let them know he is well. In the second letter to his wife Mary, Epperly writes that he does not understand why there is such a problem with the mail. Notes that other members of his regiment receive mail. Says that his regiment is stationed four miles from Atlanta, Georgia and thinks the Yankees may try to cross the river above Atlanta. Also discusses rations.

Says on 7 September while at Funchal, Madeira, they learned the CSS "Florida" was in the English Channel and they immediately started in pursuit of her. Put in to Ferrol, Spain on 14 September for coal. Heard that the "Florida" had gone to Brest, France and they left to intercept her on the 15 September. Says they arrived at Brest on 17 September, where they have blockaded the Confederate ship ever since. Says their length of time there will depend on the movements of the "Florida." Describes a march in a tremendous thunderstorm, and comments sarcastically that General William Franklin "and other generals would have thought if they had heard the conversation that night that they were thought highly of by the men of their command." Finally, asks Mary to send him a needle kit and says he includes stamps for postage.
