Letter is originally addressed to John Gleason but it may have been forwarded to Knox due to Gleason's extract that was added.

Written from Woolwich, likely in Maine. Hired a Mr. Noah Miller to do some agricultural work for him on land in New Canaan, in Lincoln County, in 1780. However, Fuller was unable to continue the improvements, because British troops took possession of some of the land, and deaths in the family and his wife's broken leg limited his ability to work. Meanwhile, a Mr. Charles Thomas began to sow seeds and burn brush on some of Fuller's land, despite Fuller forbidding him to do so in front of two witnesses. Thomas then sold some of this land. Also discusses his precarious financial situation. "You are but little acquainted with the situation of my affairs if you suppose I have money at my command -- the contrary from bad years, bad crops or bad management is so true, that I find it difficult to support my family...." Responding to a letter about Hughes's crab apple. (Spelling Mease's name "Maese.") He tells the origins of the Taliaferro apple by Major Taliaferro about 60 years before, near Williamsburg, and which he called the Robertson apple. When Taliferro "made a cask of cyder [it was]... the finest they had ever seen." Jefferson compares the Hughes crab apple to the Taliaferro and finds the latter "has more body, is less acid, and comes nearer to the silky Champaigne than any other." Written in Monticello
