Gordon, a Confederate soldier, begins his letter by stating he greatly misses his home and friends. Says that he has been attending church and receiving some comfort from religion. Writes about a man from his regiment who deserted and is now sentenced to be executed by firing squad. States that he ministered to the soldier and read to him from the Bible. "Twelve men from the Regt. will be detailed to perform the execution ... I hope that I will not be one the number he has a wife and two children she came to see him a few days ago." Adds that the man wanted his wife to stay to see him…

"They are a careless, happy set singing and dancing from sunrise to sunset; their enslaved condition affecting them but little." Men are returning unwillingly from their month-furlough for three more years' service.

Title: to his family

The first part of this letter (5 February) is written while still onboard the Sentinel while the second part (8 February) is written after the Battle of Roanoke. Reports that the 8th Regiment sustained no loses. Coit was not very engaged in this fight and writes only of musket balls being fired over the heads of his regiment after going ashore. Discusses the color guard's flag being flown over the conquered rebel fort. A note at the end says "Oh if I could see you all to night I can now assure you that there is no fun in fighting…"

Written on board the ship "the Sentinal." Comments that there are so many rumors about the battle that he would be glad to receive General Burnside's report when it appears in the newspaper. Gives more details about the battle and says "it was rather exciting stepping on hostile shores for the first time." Writes that there are 2000 rebel soldiers taken prisoner and that the Union now has control over the whole island.

Large parts of the letter are faded and it is hard to read. References receiving Henry's letter. Says she is sorry to hear that he is to lose Mr. Cunningham - who appeared to be a naval officer on Henry's ship. She knew he was an agreeable companion. Cunningham might have left the U.S. Navy to join the Confederacy. She writes, "It is a pity to think such a fine[,] efficient Navy may be no longer National." Describes the extension of lines across Hatches run with fortifications. Mentions the suffering of men on line in extreme weather, especially the wounded. Relates a story of an agreement between a "Reb" and a "Yank" to meet between the pickets to cut a tree down for wood. The Reb was not satisfied with his portion so they agreed to settle it by fistfight. Both were good fighters so they divided it equally. Both sides went out to witness the sport.
