Telegram to Colonel Paxton from an unknown soldier tells of some cavalry men shot by guerillas at Birch River. States the other camp said they cannot send ammunition because they too are expecting an attack. With autograph endorsement signed in initials by Scammon stating, "Capt Door reports that he thinks the troops about Sommerville are more scared than hurt." On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph. Written in Camp Piatt.

Title: [Telegram from Carr Bailey White]

Possibly a copy in the hand of Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon to whom the telegram was probably sent. Informs that a scout, Low Jacobs, found a path fit for infantry, but not cavalry. Gives the number of Confederate forces in their area of West Virginia, and states that some are advancing to reinforce Raleigh. Writes, "Officers heard to say if we did not attack them soon they would us. They expect to advance with six thousand, take Fayette and clear the valley - This very doubtful."

Copy of a telegram to Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon possibly in his hand. Marked cypher. Colonel White states that the Confederate cavalry came within sight last night. Says that he sent his cavalry force to the front and ordered them to attack at 2 AM. They are keeping a lookout. Year inferred from similar documents in the collection and from Scammon's rank as General.

Published by J. Wrigley at 27 Chatham Street in New York. Marked No. 844 at the top. Sung to the tune of "Annie Lisle." That song is an 1857 ballad by Boston, Massachusetts songwriter H. S. Thompson. The song is about the death of a young maiden, by what some have speculated to be tuberculosis, an awful circumstance which mirrors the tragic death of the young Colonel Ellsworth in Alexandria, Virginia. Six stanza song, which includes the chorus: "Strike, freemen, for the Union! / Sheathe your swords no more, / While remains in arms a traitor / On Columbia's shore." Framed by several images…

Lee is unable to attend an event in honor of "G. W. Hodge, the Confederate soldier whose life you saved." Furness invited Lee to attend a reunion of the Sixth Pennsylvania Cavalry, which Furness commanded. The reunion was to honor G. W. Hodge, whose life Furness saved "in the terrible days before Richmond." Lee cannot attend, but is glad to hear about stories like this, as they promote reconciliation between former enemies, "those of us who had ugly feelings in the 60s are now mellowed and living friends." Lee was invited because he was in charge of the United Confederate Veterans.…
