He describes the Battle of Chickamauga: "For two long days we fought the brave men of longstreets corps from Richmond they having two to our one…many were to be he[a]rd crying for help as we would have to walk over them and turn our ears to their cries." He wants to send her his diary of the past year and is keeping one for this year as well.

They have not encountered Price since he left or Marmaduke since he attacked a few weeks ago "with 6,000 men against 600 and got whipped." "Rebeldom is about played out."

The Confederates had an internal battle on October 28: "One brigad[e] of them was determined to quit them and ground arms and come to our lines and they was silenced by their trusty troops which terminated in three hours fight killing eight hundred men." He saw two men shot to death for desertion yesterday.

They attacked two days ago and their right wing took Lookout Mountain while the left wing held its position. Yesterday the left wing drove the Confederates from Missionary Ridge, reaching Chickamauga creek this morning. They could not push them further as all the pontoons and bridges were destroyed.

They are running a grist mill and shipping meal and flour to Knoxville. The rest of the regiment is at Knoxville with the 22nd Illinois. Burnside drove the Confederates "from in front of him with heavy los[s] on the part of the rebles." Longstreet is supposed to be nearby." The townspeople are all Union supporters.

Reports the results of many court martials, most trying soldiers for desertion and sentencing them to death or 100 lashes. 20 April 1781 entry reports on the prevention of smallpox among the soldiers. Entry for 4 May 1781 discusses sending ranks to join the light infantry under General Marquis de Lafayette. Captain Buell writes to Major Trescott of the 2nd U.S. Infantry about Trescott sending troops to join Buell, who was on his way to Middletown, Connecticut: "I hope you have at Springfield some good non Commissioned officers, as I shall have some rough fellows to go with me as Could have bin Inlisted perhaps this side of the other World." Also discusses an order for money. Trescott resigned his commission later that year and went on to found Trescott, Maine. Damaged where the seal has been removed causing minor text loss.
