He was almost killed by Bushwhackers on his way back from visiting Henry with the 75th and "had to run the gauntlet" for four miles and "just before I got through I was compel[l]ed to leave my horse & take to the mountains" and walk over 15 miles. The 75th is just 50 rods from the Confederates, "the two Armies lying so near each other and no firing by eather and at the same time each doing every thing to conquer the other but such is war." He believes the Confederates will fall back to Rome, Georgia in which case his department would not have to fight, only to open communications…

father [C. Parrott] John's health is not good. Henry is now camped at Jasper, Tennessee. John's regiment is guarding a pass in the mountains and will remain there until the river is opened. He was nearly captured returning from Chattanooga; "the Rebs got after me and shot my horse from under me and I was compelled to take to the woods. Two of the men with him did not escape and were taken prisoner. He describes his trip to Chattanooga in detail. Written at Anderson's Cross Roads.

sister [Sophia Parrott] He is glad that she is feeling better. He is anxious for his sister to meet his wife. He believes he will be able "to stand the service till the balance of the Regt is muster out" on 1 September, a "day of rejoicing." Neither his regiment nor Henry's was in the "big Battle," "the first one we ever kept out of."

Thompson answers John's father's letter seeking details of John's death. Just before John was fatally wounded, Lieutenant Thompson suggested they move as shells "were flying thick about them" but John answered "it was a good as place as any...and at that minute he was struck by the shell that caused his death." John went home for a while but returned to Army and though he told Thompson he would not do active duty, Thompson suspects he could not resist joining his men in battle.

Handwritten copy of newspaper clipping summarizing John's life, praising his character and accomplishments, and a describing his death. "At the battle of Shiloh…he was severely wounded in the head…So soon as his health permitted he was again with his regiment…But at length, at the battle of Resacca, in Georgia,…he was struck by the fragment of a shell from the enemy's battery, near the ancle, terribly mangling and nearly severing his leg." Said party that was sent after the field piece he mentioned in his previous letter to Lincoln returned in the evening. Says General Elbert came upon a wagon that was overset and that they found a "cohorn" (a small mortar) and several chests, but left them behind because it was not convenient to bring them…

First - take down the gun and rub it up and clean it. Next follow suit with the bayonet. Then comes the cartridge box and belts to black and polish. Then polish the pieces of brass on them. Then black our boots. Then make the bed and fold up the blankets and coats and lay them at the head of the bed on the knapsack. Then clean off the shelves of which we have only two." The list continues. He has to clean up his dishes and utensils…
