Mentions business with the Flucker estate, including a bond that Mr. [Thomas] Flucker had against Gorham's brother, and another bond young Mr. [Isaac] Winslow had against Gorham's brother. Lantern made from corrugated wove paper with cardboard top and base, hanging loop and internal metal candle holder. The paper is printed or painted with blue and purple (perhaps once burgundy or dark red), with the word "Union" printed twice as part of the design. Very fragile. Folded accordion style. In the early part of the diary, Barnes writes of frequent drills, hearing firing, corps reviews, pickets, various correspondence (especially with his wife), and, on 9 March, playing ball. There is battle content on 6-7 February, 5-14 May (possible part of the Wilderness campaign), 20-21 May, and 27-31 May. On 1 June, he writes that he was taken prisoner. In the subsequent entries he was marched through Georgia and spent time at Libby. He occasionally writes a forlorn entry, like on 4 July: "When can I leave this place." Quotes a Philadelphia newspaper article that characterizes opposition to War of 1812 discussed at a Quaker meeting as treason. The Quakers charge that the article is both false and a fabrication. They claim that political subjects are not discussed at their religious assemblies. They also reaffirm Quaker pacifism, but note that they are bound to live peaceably under the government, even if that means submitting to fines and imprisonment for refusing to bear arms.
