Shifflet received Fanny's ring and will keep it until he goes home, "if I live to git home." He will go home the next time he is paid "if I can git off enny way a tall." His division is "alooking for another big fight in a few days" and has "bin a skirmishing for four days." His regiment must "go on picket ever other day [and] we hav to go on to morrow." He wants "to come home the worst in the world" and says he thinks "the hold [whole] army is tired."

Has heard a report that at Spanktown, modern day Rahway, "our people" killed and wounded five hundred of the British during a foraging raid. Expresses his anguish over parting with her. Warns her that smallpox is spreading near her, and suggests "you and your little image" get inoculated. Warns her not to drink or stay too near fire afterward. Used a pontoon bridge to cross the Potomac River and go through Harpers Ferry to Bolivar Heights. Heard they are to move to Emmitsburg soon. It was so hot this afternoon that "the thermometer was 105 in the shade." Over 1,000 men suffered sun stroke. The entire army scrambled into fighting position "as soon as possible." His company was marshaled into the skirmishers line. A few members of his company were mortally wounded. Would have sent the earlier letter sooner, but had to march the next day and therefore did not have time to mail it. Is now on picket for three days starting from last night. Elisha has not arrived yet. "The Johnnies are a not very great distance from us." Most of the fighting has involved cavalry, but was involved in "a little fight for 3 or 4 hours." Asks them to say hello to Mrs. Phillips for him. Does not need them to send him a new pen. News has been nothing but good for a couple of weeks now. Hopes the war will be over by winter. Hopes they are getting along well. They have no doubt heard that their son was wounded. "He was hit in the arm a little below the right shoulder joint by a piece of shell. The wound is about 2 inches long… half as wide, and ¾ of an inch deep." It did not damage the bone, but the wound has since swollen greatly. Thinks it will all come out alright. Once again has gone into the field. In camp about 100 rods away from the 10th Massachusetts. Joined the brigade this morning after leaving New York City on Wednesday. Just saw Sid and the rest of his regiment. Engine on their train broke down, demonstrating "our usual good luck." In the front line of battle. "I don't think we shall have a fight here although we can't tell" for sure. Was taken out of the guard house the morning they left New York, and was "ordered to report to my company which I did and am with them now." Presumes he has finished that ordeal.
