Title: An account of the Stores in the Magazine & Park of Artillery.

Also signed by Richard Frothingham. Lists quantities of ordnance on hand during the siege of Yorktown. The list was composed by Frothingham, a Deputy and Principal Field Commissary of Military Stores in Knox's artillery train. It was gone over by Knox, who placed symbols next to items indicating that they were to either be shipped to Philadelphia or "remain with Mr. [Thomas] Jones in Virginia."

Title: State of the Artillery at York and its vicinity.

Lists quantities of various types of ordnance remaining after the siege of Yorktown including ordnance "taken from the English." Also gives a proposed breakdown between stores held by Colonel Edward Carrington, the state of Virginia, and Philadelphia. A note on the final page indicates that 1,000 arms and accoutrements and 250,000 musket cartridges are to be sent by Carrington to Nathanael Greene, and some to North Carolina. The rest of the ordnance will be deposited at Richmond, Virginia. Henry Knox's copy.

Discusses the difficulties of inducing good men to serve. Suggest the establishment of military academies. Discusses the problems of the Continental Army with reference to the activities in New York. Praises Gerge Washington and Nathanael Greene. Believes the Battle of Long Island was their one chance to win in New York. Discusses the fortification of Harlem Heights.

Colonel Carrington writes to Knox from "Camp High Hills of Santee," near the Santee River in South Carolina. Reports that he received Knox's previous letter via Governor [John] Rutledge. Informs Knox he has been transferred to Virginia and, per the General's wish, will remain the Quartermaster's Department. Praises General Nathanael Greene's recent campaign in South Carolina.

General Chastellux (signed Chastelleaux) requests that Knox admit a French doctor who served in the Revolutionary War to the Society of the Cincinnati. Writes, "... you remember very well dear general, that after the siege of york you left behind a great number of sicks and that an american hospital was settled at Williamsburg... no american physician attended there, and doctor coste only took care of those soldiers, for the whole winter." Notes that the Marquis de Lafayette supports Coste's acceptance into the Society. Also mentions that Coste saved Chastellux's life.

Certificate verifying the admission of Lewis Campbell, a soldier in the first New Jersey Regiment guarding George Washington, to the hospital "for the cure of a wound received thro' his body ..." Lewis was wounded at King's Bridge and sent to the hospital at Robinson's Farm. Page one is signed by William Eustis (Hospital Surgeon), Jackson (Colonel of the 3rd Massachusetts Regiment) and David Townsend (Hospital Surgeon). Page two, a certification of Campbell's service and wound received, is written and signed by Caleb Gibbs.

Possibly written in Virginia. Two days before the Battle of Ball's Bluff, Confederate General Evans informs Colonel Jordan that "the Enemy have appeared in the Turnpike between Dranesville and this place, in considerable force." Reports that he is making preparations to meet the Union force, and requests reinforcements. In a postscript, he states that Union soldiers "appeared about 3 P.M. today within 10 miles of this place- when they ran my picketts in." Docketed by General Pierre Gustave Toutant-Beauregard (in pencil), commanding troops in Northern Virginia.

Orders written the morning of the Battle of Fredericksburg. Burnside is "this moment preparing orders for you," and tells Franklin to "Make no movement except for defense until they arrive." Also hopes "to be with you this morning." Franklin was in charge of a large portion of the army during this assault. After the bloody Union defeat, accused Franklin of disobeying orders and blamed him for being partly responsible for the Union defeat. Written near Corinth, Mississippi. Fagan, Colonel commanding the 1st Arkansas Regiment, writes to Ruggles, commanding the 2nd Division, Army of Mississippi. Relates that General Braxton Bragg, commander of 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi, ordered Fagan to move his regiment to join other regiments forming the 1st Brigade of Ruggles's division, and to assume command of the brigade. Orders reflect preparation for operations against Corinth. One bust engraving of Fagan included as collateral.

States "Capt Langhorne's troop, the only cavalry with my command- leaves this morning- I shall therefore be absolutely without the means of communication with Head Quarters & with other Commands- And without cavalry pickets in our flank - I shall be glad if you will hasten the ordering of the promised troops to operate with my Brigade." Enemy gunboats attacked, trying to reach New Orleans, then retreated. Writes of "another turn at the Enemy today - six gun boats and four frigates having come up to point of woods below. All gone back again, and well." Written to his wife in New Orleans. Johnson K. Duncan was a Confederate Brigadier General in command of the coastal defenses that protected New Orleans, including Fort Jackson and Fort St. Philip.
