The earth mound in front of [to the the left in the image] the house might be the graves of horses killed in the fighting. Text on recto reads: "General Meade's Headquarters, A position of great peril, occupied by the General during the heaviest part of the conflict. It is situated on the west side of the Tanneytown road, a short distance south of the National Cemetery." The image is almost identical to the Tipton image of Meade's headquarters with a difference in cropping. See GLC 5111.01.0302

Title: to Alexander Mouton

Thanks Mouton and the Louisiana legislature for a resolution that repaid to him a fine from 1815. He thanks them for "wiping from my memory the past imputations." In 1815 Judge Hall fined Jackson for enforcing martial law in New Orleans. Jackson strongly resented the fine, since he felt he had done what was necessary. Finally, not long before his death, the state legislature agreed to repay him the fine, with interest.

Taken by O'Sullivan. Frassanito states that this is the earliest known photograph of the gatehouse after the battle. The artillery earthworks occupied by Stewart's Battery B, 4th U.S. Arty. can be seen in the foreground. Seated in the wagon that is on the Baltimore Pike are a few of the many civilians that would flock to the battlefield shortly after the fighting was over. See GLC 5111.01.0225, .0305

Ink inscription on verso: "Antietam #22." Graphite inscription on verso: "Federal Graves. Burnside's Bridge." Numeric notation: "585 V." An unidentified Federal soldier leans against a stone wall that borders Antietam Creek. From here the 51st NY fired on the Confederates on the wooded ridgeline above [opposite bank] and soon charged the bridge itself. Wooden grave markers appear in front of the wall. Frassanito [Antietam, p. 240] has identified four of the graves as being those of Sgt. George W. Loud, Pvt. Edward Miller, Pvt. John Thompson, and Cpl. Michael Keefe.
