Marked "Plate 37." A small party of cavalrymen are clearing the way while the main body is moving forward in support. A forest with a house in front of it can be seen in the distance. Actual size of the image without the margins is 27.7 x 40.3 cm. Outline from matting is faintly visible. Title and image information taken from the table of contents.

Title: to Eliakim P. Scammon

Marked cypher at top. Brigadier General Kelley writes to Brigadier General Scammon discussing the journey of General William Woods Averell from Beverly to Lewisburg, West Virginia. States he is taking 10 days of rations. Advises that Scammon give General Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffie the same orders as Averell so they may reach Lewisburg with their troops at the same time. Mentions Confederate deserters, "Quite a number of Jacksons men after being so severely whipped at Bulltown have deserted and come inside our lines."

Mentions receipt of socks, gloves and diary from home. References Battle of Fredericksburg, Union Commander William S. Rosecrans and the Battle of Murfreesboro. Also comments on General W. T. Brooks' thoughts on the 2nd Regiment and their courage during the Battle of Sharpsburg. Describes his feelings towards General George B. McClellan whom he admires greatly. Written from Camp at Belle Plain Landing, Virginia.

Provides an illustration and description of Union and Confederate battle formations including skirmish lines, lines of battle for infantry, batteries, and reserves. Mentions his promotion to orderly sergeant, and details the duties associated with this job. Describes his camp at Belle Plain Landing in Virginia, where this letter was written.
