Orchard Knob was the site of a battle that took place on November 23, 1863. Confederate soldiers had been stationed on the Knob, but were pushed back to Missionary Ridge upon the advance of about 14,000 Union soldiers. Union General Ulysses S. Grant later used Orchard Knob as an observation post.

Missionary Ridge had served as a Confederate stronghold from September to October 1863, when General Braxton Bragg's army laid seige to the Union army positioned at Chattanooga. On November 25th, Union soldiers captured Missionary Ridge and held it as a logistics base for General William T. Sherman's 1864 campaigns through Atlanta.

The sky has been double-printed. Resaca was the site of a May 13-15, 1864 battle between Union forces led by General William T. Sherman and Confederate troops commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman employed a flanking technique that proved successful in overpowering Johnston's command, winning the battle for the Union.

A man sits on a fallen tree trunk on the right side of the road. Buzzard Roost refers to a gap between the mountains north of Resaca, Georgia through which Union General William T. Sherman directed two columns to meet Confederate troops during the May 9, 1864 Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. The 5-day battle lasted from May 7 - May 13 and resulted in a Union victory.

The name "John Burns" is penciled in on the mount next to the printed title to indicate that he is the "old patriot" in question. View of John Burns's house, which is no longer standing, and surrounding buildings. Very sharp and clear view of the farm buildings. Note the decorative window coverings.
