In postscript states, "enclosed to Shaw and Randall and [illegible] to them to deliver in paper and to [obtain] an answer."

Discusses the application of the Marquis de Bouille to the Society of the Cincinnati. Also asks the Count d'Estaing for a list of the officers in the French Navy who are members of the Society; would like to use this list to to fill out diplomas for those members. Mentions that the "president General" [Washington] is too busy at the [Constitutional] Convention to perform this service. Finally, thanks the Count for submitting "Ideas on the Association of the Cincinnati" which the Count wrote in 1784 (see GLC02437.03027). Is not sure the Society will decide to adopt any of the recommendations…

Suggests "the propriety of replacing the cannon, giving them a proper supply of ammunition and sending 20,000 rounds for the infantry - Capt. Seward is pressing for a supply of ammunition as it is expected the enemy will visit the frontier of state soon with a pretty large body of troops." Written by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide-de-camp. Knox gives a report on the state of West Point soon before his intended departure for Boston. Notes the dissolution of several companies/corps. Gives status of hospital, cannon, ammunition and supplies, and ordnance. Writes, "I hope it may not be thought presumptuous or impertinent to indulge the rapture which fills my mind upon so interesting a contrast, so honorable and so highly flattering to my country- especially when so great a part of the cannon are trophies, wrested by the hand of virtue from the arm outstretched to oppress it."…

Signed with initials. Lists several posts established by Lord Cornwallis in South Carolina which had been reduced and evacuated by American forces. Notes that there are about 1200 prisoners in the reduced works. Adds that these posts secured Britain to South Carolina and the destruction of these forts would break Britain's tie to South and North Carolina. Originally enclosed with GLC02437.01063.

Recommends his nephew as a worthy gunsmith, and asks if Knox can "procure an Employment for him in the Armourer's Department that might enable him to gain a decent Livelyhood after his great sufferings, in the common cause..."

Says Captain Cottineau should direct his application to those gentlemen. Place not listed, however, another letter (GLC02437.05074) written on the same day places Knox in Philadelphia.

Mentions Bastia surrendered to Lord Hood, mostly due to lack of supplies. Notes there have been several French ships cruising in the Mediterranean, even with the British nearby. Comments the Spaniards were once again defeated in Catalonia. Mentions a rumor about Knox retiring.

Colonel Custine led the Régiment de Saintonge, which was selected in 1780 by the Count de Rochambeau to participate in the French expeditionary force to America that aided in the siege of Yorktown.

By pursuing this method I obtained three hundred subscribers in one day."
