Written in Timothy Pickering's hand. Signed in text by Pickering in the body of the document. Docket on verso is in Knox's hand. The extract says: "If it is well ascertained that the Chain can be preserved in perfect order for future use, I should advise it to be housed in the manner you mentioned, but if the fact is otherwise or even very doubtful, of which I wish General Knox to be consulted, I would recommend that it should be sold without delay."

Refers to limestone previously discussed with Knox in relation to Washington's construction projects. Sends his best wishes to Knox, his wife Lucy, and their family.

Later copy. An estimated date of March 1780 is written in pencil at the top of page. Washington thanks Knox for three recent favors, including sending him a "Suit of the Hartford Manufacture." Discusses a recent election, noting that votes have been in favor of Mr. Adams (possibly John Adams). Comments on the severe weather, noting that it will prevent some members from attending an unspecified event (possibly Congress). Hopes Knox has recovered from a "painful disorder."

A working manuscript that has been corrected by Knox probably intended for George Washington. Consists of several secret articles pertaining to the proposed treaty; in each case, "secret" has been struck. One article grants trading rights in United States ports. If the Spanish obstruct Creek commerce, promises to transport Creek goods through United States territory until the obstruction is removed, as long as the goods do not exceed 60,000 dollars in worth. Provinces stationery. Docket notes, "50,000 Enfield Rifles offered to be furnished at the rate of 3000 per month- Price not to exceed $18.50 delivered in New York City."

Also mentions quartering soldiers.
