Broadside created as a memoriam for Captain George Tilley Burch of Co. I, 29th Georgia Regiment who was killed in the Battle of Atlanta. Died at City Hall Hospital on 13 July 1864 from wounds that pierced both his knees in a charge near Kenesaw Mountain. Says he was a graduate of Mercer College in 1861. Joined the army at Savannah, Georgia in August or September 1861 for a 3-year-term. Showed extreme fortitude during the Mississippi campaign and kept up his command in trying circumstances. Docket reads "please mail this to her." Addressed to "Mrs. George L. Stearns." Mary's husband George was a member of The Secret Six, the group that financed Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry.

Labeled Vol. 1 no. 3. Southard serves as editor. Published by D. K. Hitchcock. With front paper engraving depicting William [Lloyd] Garrison attempting to chop down a tree labeled "Slavery" while a minister, soldier, businessman and President Van Buren attempt to support the tree. Contains many illustrations showing the injustices of slavery. Closes with Garrison's address opposing the annexation of Texas to the Union as a "slaveholding country." Edges are extremely delicate.

Published by Crocker & Brewster. Stuart, a minister and Professor of Biblical Studies at Andover Seminary (near Boston), justifies slavery using a Biblical argument. Also predicts the economic repercussions of abolition: "Suppose the black population are made free; then what is to be done with them after this, specially in those States, or parts of States, where they are more numerous than the whites; how are they going to live and prosper... What then I ask the Abolitionists... what is to be done with such a population?" Argues for colonization.
