Discusses possible solutions. Mrs. Johnson, the wife of Captain Lieutenant John Johnson, who was taken prisoner at the Battle of Long Island, was glad to receive a letter from Knox. Thinks it wise for Lucy Knox to stay in Boston for the winter. Inquires about a Mr. Cheever (possibly Ezekiel Cheever), who was possibly wounded.

Fears that the British might attack when the current army's enlistment ends. Laments not enlisting last year and hopes for a solution to the manpower problem. Notes that a privateer has taken a prize bound for Halifax from London.

Agrees that Boston men show "indifference" to joining the army. States his willingness to "resign my commission to the Post Master General" as long as he can join Knox as an "aid de Camp." Tells Knox "to be with you & share your Dangers is my sincere Desire." Congratulates Knox "on the capture of many prizes," especially the capture of a ship from Scotland to New York carrying "7,000 shirts ready made, 11,000 hair stockings, & 17,000 pairs shoes, besides many other articles in great demand for the army." The invoice on board the ship states the goods are worth "25,000 sterling."

Speaks of the importance of friendship and the value of his friendship with Knox. Promises to purchase goods for Henry Knox. Inquires as to how the "independant company" is faring in Boston. States that he was drafted into the continental army but got out of it by paying a fine of ten pounds. "Political affairs seem to wear a gloomy appearance at present," and he worries about the news he has received that Howe is in Philadelphia and the Congress is moving to Baltimore. Howe was not in Philadelphia at the time and the Congress would not flee to Baltimore until the next week.

States that the army has been forced to flee, and the Americans are currently "making a stand on the side of the Delaware toward Philadelphia." Hopes to soon face the enemy again. In three days the Americans will cross the Delaware as they continue to dodge the British, only to recross on Christmas Day in order to launch a surprise attack on the British.

Orders Knowles to Philadelphia to get "accounts of the Regmt from General Mifflins [store] & the Quarter master Generals whilst under the direction of Colo Moylan," and then return quickly to Knox. Written four days after the American victory at Trenton and four days before their victory at Princeton. On verso is a Henry Knox autograph document, circa 30 December 1776, comprising a list of distances between various New Jersey towns. This information would have been extremely useful for plotting troop movements and organizing scouting parties.
