Title: [Instructions to officers at West Point]

Written by Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide, and signed by Shaw on Knox's behalf. Covers many aspects of the defense of West Point and the need to avoid a surprise attack. Knox gives instructions pertaining to arms and ammunition, sentries, guardhouses, closing of the gates, provisions, alarms, and signals. Signed by eight officers commanding redoubts and forts in the vicinity of West Point. These men acknowledge receipt of Knox's instructions.

Knox signs twice: 2 April from Artillery Quarters in New Jersey, and another time certifying that the account information cited is accurate. Signed 3 April 1779 by Nathaniel Ayers, Justice of the Peace for Somerset County, New Jersey. Signed 6 April 1779 by James Johnston, Auditor of Accounts for the Main Army. Addresses letter "Dear Cousin." Reports on the movements of his regiment, the Ohio 46th Infantry. States they have been on the move for over a month since leaving camp in Scottsboro, Alabama. Discusses the battle at Dallas, Alabama in great detail. Says they laid in their breastworks for ten days. Informs him they use the Spencer rifle with great success. Expresses relief at his duties as clerk, allowing him to stay back with the wagons to take care of books and papers. Mentions his furlough and how enjoyable it was.

Writes that it is unlikely that his regiment will be called to the war front. Asks that cheese and butter be delivered to him with someone that is going back to camp. Five House resolutions discussing St. Clair's failed expedition against the Indians in Ohio. Absolves St. Clair from the blame of the failure of the expedition. It was not a "consequence of any defective qualitites, or insufficient quatities of arms, accoutrements, or powder or other military stores furnished for the said expedition." Previously estimated date as 1 November. Writing is faded and pages are stained with four water stains. Letterpress copy.

He was detailed and had to leave the 79th to work a twelve pound brass cannon in the 20th Ohio Battery. He does not feel in any more danger as "I can dodge a shell or canon ball some times but a musket ball I can not." The battery consists of two brass cannon and four rifle cannon. With note to Phebe Jane Walker on verso re: ballad composed in honor of Joseph Walker.

Marion states he has heard that some troublesome people are plundering the inhabitants of the neighborhood and that they have no ammunition to fight back. He requests Richardson deliver to General Joseph Hill 12 pounds of gun powder and a proportionate amount of lead. He indicates that he is going to join General Nathanael Greene. Ballou was promoted from Captain to Major on the day Morey was killed.
