to mother [Ann Smith] A "spasm" occurred involving an attack on a Union foraging party, causing orders to be prepared to leave. He describes the arrival of troops, arms, and ships, noting those ships from Massachusetts. He tells of a letter he received from Wallace, and discusses the current military news and a compliment to his regiment. He expresses a wish to go with the Engineers that have received orders to move. Numbered in pencil "19." Written at Camp Hamilton.

to mother [Ann Smith] Life in camp is dull. The regiment has a new lieutenant. His company is very good at drilling, and they are practicing under Col. Max Weber from Europe. The brigade practiced firing, and he says "there is music in the whistle of minnie balls especially when you hear some three thousand of them at once." He answers a question about his daily schedule. The sutler's store is closing, and he is glad. He received a letter from Natick, Massachusetts. Numbered in pencil "32." Written at Camp Hamilton.

Cranor reports his return to Chattanooga by train. He came through as a guard and didn't have to march. Despite the comfortable passage he reports that most want to return home but he himself does not with to go: "I would not take a discharge if they would offer it to me[.]" He thinks that he will go to the front soon and reports that he got a Henry rifle.

Slayton thanks the committee for their recognition, but accepts the sword on the behalf of all the men who have enlisted. Slayton recognizes that enslaved people are being used to aide the Confederates and that the continued allowance of slavery is hurting the Union cause. He then urges people to petition the government to the end slavery. He also describes the motivations of married men to fight. He expresses his commitment to the Union cause. Included is an envelope the envelope in which this written copy of the speech was kept with an inscription describing the contents.

Then black our boots. Then make the bed and fold up the blankets and coats and lay them at the head of the bed on the knapsack. Then clean off the shelves of which we have only two." "This week chronicles a new era in my army life." "Rejoiced" to hear the box with his boots is on its way. Thinks the shoemaker purposely delayed the making of his boots. It is ridiculous that he had to go all the way to Boston to find leather. "We had a chapel built and we have prayer meetings 3 evenings of the week, a bible class Sunday forenoon and preaching in the afternoon." Has gone to some of the prayer sessions, but does not want to go today because he has guard duty tonight. Weather has been very cold for a week now.
