It was expected the whole of the enemy would be in our hands within a week. A part of the Cherokee nation had... broken faith with us... they had in consequence been severely chastised."

He complains: "[B]oth the [Supreme] Court & Bar could not put a just Construction of the Law, they acknowledged it to be ambiguous.... Cannot Congress explain the meaning or design of their laws." He asks "Cannot & ought not Congress to pass an Act forbidding any matters which were determined & finally settled in the State Courts prior to the Federal Constitution[?]"

Closes by quipping: "Van Buren seems to have got the start of Mr. Calhoun, but the whirligig of Time brings about its revenges."

Don Juan Ellis was a Sergeant in the Fiftieth North Carolina Infantry.

Written in secretarial hand and signed by Secretary of Navy Crowninshield to Captain Porter. Says that Porter was appointed to the board of the Naval Commission (a post he held 1815-1822) by the President and that he is to report to the department at his earliest convenience. Porter was a successful naval commander during the War of 1812 and later led the Mexican Navy from 1826-1829.
