Hand bound notebook containing detailed instructions for marching maneuvers. In one half of the notebook, Renshaw has written out instructions for the loading, firing and inspection of arms. When flipped over, the other half of the notebook contains instructions for various maneuvers -- for example, sections titled "To Break into Column of Platoons from a halt" and "To change directions towards Guide." This side of the booklet also includes two unlabeled lists of men's names. Written in pen and pencil and sewn in the middle with black thread.

He participated in the Battle of Roanoke Island (7-8 February 1862) under the command of Union Army Brigadier General Ambrose E. Burnside, attacking a Confederate fleet off the coast of North Carolina. Written off Roanoke Island.

He reports that the monitor "Weehawken" has sunk, probably due to a boiler explosion. He is upset by the reports of the Sanitary Commission which tell of the hardships at Belle Island, a prisoner of war camp in Richmond. He worries over the fate of a soldier.
