A print of a photograph of the U.S.S. Hartford. Graphite inscription on recto: "U. S. S. S. [sic] Hartford. 1864. Mobile Bay." Cancelled, red five cent "playing card" stamp on verso. Three mast sailing vessel that also has a steam stack in the center of the ship. The Hartford, a first-class sloop, was the flagship of Admiral Farragut's fleet. A print of a photograph of Admiral David G. Farragut and Captain Percival Drayton on the deck of the USS Hartford (1858). Farragut leans against the wheel, while the ship's commander, Captain Drayton stands to the left of him. The Hartford served as Farragut's flagship in his position as Admiral of the US Navy. A print of a photograph taken of a US Navy riverine patrol boat during the Civil War. It is a steam double-ended sidewheel gunboat of what is popularly referred to as the "Sassacus"-class. Built for patroling rivers, many were deployed to Virginia where photographer Matthew B. Brady would have had access to them. Below the image "Brady" and "Washington" are written in black ink.

A print of a photograph of boats in a river. Over a dozen boats can be seen. The titular pontoon bridge can be seen stretching across the horizon. Penciled below the image is: "Pontoon bridge across the James River over which the army of the Potomac passed on it [sic] way to Richmond, Va." The section of the River is likely that 'below' Richmond between the city and Hampton Roads. Written note on verso: "the ironclad in far right of photograph is the Monitor "Atlanta" (in handwriting of F.H. Meserve).

One photograph of a gunboat known as the Monitor Sangus dated 1864. Taken by Egbert Guy Fowx. The title is taken from the inscription on the recto. The image shows "Saginaw," a Federal steamer, and "Sangus," a monitor [ironclad], on the James River. The hull of "Sangus" appears to be painted white, and the canvas has been strung up over the deck to provide shelter from the elements. Army camp tents can be seen in the background along the opposite bank of the river.

The "De Soto," [a small U.S. army tug] after losing its rudder in the mud, was burned by its officers to keep it out of Confederate hands. A print of a photograph of the USS Louisville, a City-class ironclad gunboat laid down in September of 1861. Many sailors and/or officers can be see standing on the deck, the Louisville had a crew of 251. Inscription on recto: "Louisville iron clad gun boat 12 guns. Mississippi Squadron, 1864." The Louisville actually had at 14 guns at any point during the war, including all of 1864. Vicksburg looms in the backgorund. Note this image has been mounted over an oval photograph of a soldier.

A print of a photograph of the USS Santiago de Cuba, a wooden, brigantine-rigged, side wheel steamer built in 1861 at Brooklyn, N.Y., was purchased by the Navy on 6 September 1861 at New York City; and was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on November 5th, 1861, Comdr. Daniel B. Ridgely in command. Patrolled waters off the Eastern Seaboard for Confederate ships and blockade runners. Decommissioned July 17th, 1865, and sold on September 21st, 1865. Served as a mercantile ship for two decades afterward. Other frigates can be seen docked in the background.
