Slayton thanks the committee for their recognition, but accepts the sword on the behalf of all the men who have enlisted. Slayton recognizes that enslaved people are being used to aide the Confederates and that the continued allowance of slavery is hurting the Union cause. He then urges people to petition the government to the end slavery. He also describes the motivations of married men to fight. He expresses his commitment to the Union cause. Included is an envelope the envelope in which this written copy of the speech was kept with an inscription describing the contents.

Writes to her publisher concerning reprinting her early book, "The Mayflower," for the benefit of "a great fair...at my brothers church in Brooklyn for the 'Mayflower Mission' supported by Plymouth Church for the care of the poor in a destitute section of Brooklyn." In a vertical postscript she writes, "I trust you are keeping an eye out about renewing the Copy right of Uncle Tom ["Uncle Tom's Cabin"]." Written from Mandarin, the Stowe's vacation home in Florida. Two black and white bust engravings of Stowe included.

Congratulates him on his "success in helping achieve the first victory which the North has won over the South since 1808, when the slave trade with Africa was abolished. I might better say, the first victory of freedom over Slavery since the Declaration of Independence -- for there was no fight in 1808." Banks was a member of Congress from Massachusetts. In 1856 he declined the presidential nomination of the American party.
