List of prisoners on front, with place of imprisonment, endorsed on verso by Lincoln. At the bottom of the list is a note of congressman Brutus J. Clay, requesting the discharge of the above. Lincoln orders the discharge of nine soldiers upon taking oath, and a discharge for William Yocum "not as a prisoner of war, but for an offence for which he has perhaps suffered enough...." Yokum, an employee in charge of contrabands (escaped slaves) at Cairo, Ill., had been sentenced to five years hard labor for "aiding in the kidnapping of employees of the U.S." (quoting Basler 7: 167 note).…

They broke and run making scarcely any fight at all. but even this was no worse than one of the white regiments which did the same thing. They have received word of the capture of Atlanta. His train and depot were inspected and Col. Howard said, "he never before saw a depot in as good order..." Grant's army has taken possession of the Weldon railroad. He is trying to find a substitute for his brother George. Walbridge had hoped to send a colored man up to Buffalo to take George's place, but General Butler forbid any black man from leaving the department. He hopes a friend of his can find a white substitute.
