Pamphlet
Title: Speech of R.T. Merrick, Delivered Before the Illinois State Democratic Convention at Springfield, Illinois, January 16, 1861
Published by S.P. Rounds' Steam Book and Job Printing House. Includes resolutions adopted by the Illinois State Democratic Convention. In his speech, Merrick blames the dissolution of the Union on the "bitter, vindictive, fanatical and uncompromising spirit of the abolitionists of the North." Criticizes the Republican party, particularly Abraham Lincoln by stating that " they are ready to maintain the integrity of a party platform at the expense of the integrity of the Union."
