Has spent the last three days on picket, near a widow with 21 contraband slaves who refuse to leave her. "They are a careless, happy set singing and dancing from sunrise to sunset; their enslaved condition affecting them but little." Men are returning unwillingly from their month-furlough for three more years' service.

Large parts of the letter are faded and it is hard to read. References receiving Henry's letter. Says she is sorry to hear that he is to lose Mr. Cunningham - who appeared to be a naval officer on Henry's ship. She knew he was an agreeable companion. Cunningham might have left the U.S. Navy to join the Confederacy. She writes, "It is a pity to think such a fine[,] efficient Navy may be no longer National." She begins by apologizing for not writing sooner, but says that shortly after she started a letter, she was called away to see her cousin Frank, who appeared to be on his deathbed. He became delirious and spoke about God and the Devil, but appears to have recovered. She mentions that the friends Sarah made when she visited.

One issue of New York Daily Tribune newspaper dated February 7, 1862. Contains news on Civil War battles and current events. Of particular note is an article on the fourth page stating, "The President in respiting the slaver Gordon for two weeks, notified him that the grace is extended only that he may have time to prepare himself for the fate which his crimes have merited, and that no further mercy is to be hoped for."
