Secretary of War Davis responds to a letter from California Senator Weller sent on 12 January 1857, which included an enclosed document from Thomas Buckmaster. Reports that Buckmaster claimed Davis had underestimated the amount of money Congress owed individuals and companies for supplies purchased by Crosman, (possibly George Hampton Crosman), former Major in the Army. Davis replied that Crosman's successor, Major Babbitt (possibly Edwin Burr Babbitt) has investigated the matter and sent an estimate on 24 January 1857 to the Ways and Means Committee.

Concerning taxation and the national debt. This was a first draft which Washington later discarded. The manuscript was disassembled by Jared Sparks and leaves or clippings were given away as samples of GW's handwriting. Sparks regarded the document as unimportant since Washington had not actually used this draft. See other leaves: GLC 639.25 and 1589.

Typed on printed stationery dated from Cincinnati. Taft writes Johnson of the Century Magazine that Andrew Carnegie's article on tariffs will prove useful in revising schedules. Carnegie argued, according to Taft, that the US could produce steel more cheaply than abroad.

Certificate, signed by Fulton, entitling Cadwallader D. Colden to one share of "Hudson River Steam Boat Stock" upon payment of $500. Certificate refers to May 13, 1814, articles of agreement and August 1, 1814 memorandum of agreement between Fulton and Colden and contains receipt, acknowledging payment of $250. Colden (1769-1834), Robert Fulton's friend, lawyer, and first biographer, later became mayor of New York and a U.S. congressman. Promise to pay $2,500 by January, 1882 for the Beauvoir plantation owned by Dorsey in Harrison County, Mississippi. The note was to serve as a lien against the property. Davis and his wife moved onto the estate grounds in 1877, so that Davis could write his memoirs. Dorsey died before the note came due, but left Beauvoir and three other plantations to Davis in her will.
