Writes there is a gentleman here from the [Waldo] patent [lands] and he says "the people are now perfectly contented & happy in consequence of your late visit and the operation of Bibles - Rum - Spelling books - Brandy." Informs Knox that they celebrated Washington's birthday in Boston.

Asks Knox to send him one of the reports from the Secretary of Treasurer, [Alexander] Hamilton, when they are printed. Does not believe they will be disappointed by Hamilton's "abilities & industry." Discusses the state of securities noting the prices remain the same. Informs Knox a petition has been signed by the merchants and traders of Boston to annihilate the state excise. Says 200 to 300 of the most respectable men have signed the petition and it is the general opinion that this part of the revenue be under the direction of the general government.

Knox says that Captain Lieutenant Kemper has been arrested "at the instance Colonel Crane for uttering expressions to his prejudice." Says the cause of the arrest happened after Kemper received his furlough "and a special permission from head quarters, and there he is of opinion the arrest must be nugatory as in the case of Major Reid, of which he has heard."
