Notes thoughts and worries of "Our merchants & fishermen" in regard to the Mackerel Fishery Bill.

Title: Joint resolutions of the General Assembly of the State of Iowa, in relation to slavery and the admission of Kansas into the Union.

House of Representatives mis. doc. no. 38 (34th Congress, 3rd session). Grimes, Governor of Iowa, approved these resolutions in January 1857. Reprinted by Congress in February. Iowa states its opposition to "the further extension of slavery within the jurisdiction or by the sanction of the general government." Supports the admission of Kansas into the Union as a free state.

Keifer, a United States Representative from Ohio, writes "I will do what I can to aid in the passage of the bill you refer to for the benefit of Genl Hunt, who deserves the relief proposed by that bill. I know his history very well. I think great injustice has been done by our government to many of those old officers who have devoted their lives in sustaining the integrity of the army and submitting to whatever sacrifices came." Title: [Notes regarding claims of officers]

States the two commissioned officers should produce evidence that a claimant was wounded in the service of the United States. Says the evidence needs to include the time and object of the expedition the officer was on as well as the name of the commanding officer. Also, two respectable physicians should certify the claimant's situation. This evidence needs to be heard in an open court. Notes the Secretary of War is authorized to deal with each situation and that fraud cases are to be heard before the House of Representatives. Date written in a different hand with a black pen.
