Signed by Lincoln on 11 July 1863. Brigadier General Edward Canby informs Major General Schofield that John A. Gurley, the Governor of Arizona, will be passing through the Missouri Territory. Requests that Schofield, stationed in Missouri, provide Gurley with an escort. States that Gurley and his party intend to organize a civil government for the Arizona Territory; Lincoln approves this intention.

There is some text loss, including half of Jefferson's signature.

Virginia Governor Jefferson tells the "County Lieutenant of Berkeley" that men having been deserting from the French army and navy in America and instructs him to give orders to apprehend any possible foreign deserters at the ferry crossings in Berkeley. He is to send any suspects to the headquarters of the Marquis de Lafayette. Being addressed from Charlottesville is unusual.

Grant is wearing a black mourning band on his left arm in remembrance of Abraham Lincoln, who had recently been assassinated. Verso contains docket with autograph note signed by J. Harper and plate of Pittsburgh bookseller. Harper's note states that he got the autograph from Grant himself, and is giving it to a friend, Mrs. Chuffat. Same photograph as GLC01320.01.

In the early part of the diary, Barnes writes of frequent drills, hearing firing, corps reviews, pickets, various correspondence (especially with his wife), and, on 9 March, playing ball. There is battle content on 6-7 February, 5-14 May (possible part of the Wilderness campaign), 20-21 May, and 27-31 May. On 1 June, he writes that he was taken prisoner. In the subsequent entries he was marched through Georgia and spent time at Libby. He occasionally writes a forlorn entry, like on 4 July: "When can I leave this place." The 24 July entry is a poem mentioning President Lincoln: "…

Monroe attempts to gather support for his claims for reimbursement of compensation owed for serving as United States Minister to Great Britain between 1803 and 1807, as well as performing other diplomatic duties in France. He encloses a pamphlet with related documents (not included) for his correspondent to read, and describes his claim, the interest owed, and the injustice that he has suffered by not receiving compensation. Congress awarded him $30,000 in 1831.

Countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward. Dyer was convicted in December, 1859, and sentenced to the jail at Plymouth, Massachusetts. He remained in prison after completing his sentence because he was unable to pay his fine. He was pardoned at the request of Massachusetts politicians, Senator Henry Wilson, and representatives Alexander H. Rice, Charles R. Train, and H. L. Dawes. B. F. Hallett also requested Dyer's pardon.

Arthur Franzblau was convicted of using the mails in a scheme to defraud in the U.S. District Court of Southern New York and sentenced to one year in the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia. He appealed to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals on 2 February 1924 where his case was still pending. Coolidge commuted his sentence to one day in the custody of a U.S. Marshal; no reason given. Countersigned by William D. Mitchell, Acting Attorney General. Printed document with blanks filled in with type.

Convicted of violating Internal Revenue laws; sentenced to pay a $1000 fine and to be imprisoned until fine is paid. Pardoned after spending some months in prison and proving entirely unable to pay the fine due to poverty, and by recommendation of the U.S. District Attorney, A.S. Ridgby, the Mayor of Baltimore, most of the jury who convicted him, and many respectable citizens. (c/s William H. Seward)

Describes an attack on President Andrew Johnson in Indianapolis on or about 10 September 1866, and a subsequent melee. "The president... retired in disgust. As soon as he got inside, a shot fired at him, the ball passing within two feet of Genl Grant's head."
