Encloses a piece of a rebel flag that he acquired from a Confederate gun boat (not present). The second, on verso, is dated 29 January 1863 and written to an unknown recipient by Etta Reese from Pulaski, Tennessee. Reese's letter contains a fragment of a poem.

Writes from Mt. Holly, a present day township in Burlington County, New Jersey. Informs Ogden his son was wounded and taken prisoner. Notes he obtained this information from a soldier who was captured at the same time. The soldier said that Thomas's wound had been treated. This information was confirmed in a letter received on 4 July from Dr. Armstrong of the 5th New York Cavalry, a fellow prisoner who, like Thomas, was being treated at Libby Prison Hospital in Richmond, Virginia. In a postscript, Ekings informs Ogden of the doctor's opinion on his son's wound.

Reports seeing many battles, stating that Gaines Mills, Manassas, Cramptons Gap, and Antietam were "the hardest fought." Writes his regiment has been thinning lately due to their frequent engagements, but two more regiments have recently joined them. He reports that the men have received their winter clothing, and concludes by informing Ogden that he has been promoted to acting sergeant major.
