Judge Dent gave the newly wed couple the land in 1848 and in 1855, grant built the cabin he would name "Hardscrabble." Written near St. Louis, Missouri

Long purple ink inscription of W. H. Chamberlain pasted on verso. Chamberlain claims to have spoken to Capt. J. Frank Richardson, who identified this ship as the "General Bragg." However, the inscription has been crossed out and the name "The General Bragg" has been struck on the recto." Graphite inscription on recto "(For the book)." Stamp of Century Company and graphite inscription "VI 83" on verso. The Naval Historic Society identifies this image as beign that of the "General Bragg." She served the Confederacy as the "cottonclad" ram CSS General Bragg in 1862 and was captured off…

Shows a large group of Confederate prisoners posing in front of the barracks at Camp Douglas, a prison camp located outside of Chicago. What appears to be a fire hydrant can be seen in the bottom center of the image. The image is faded and mounted on muslin cloth. It bears the stamp of the Century Co. on the back and the crop markings on the front match the image used in their Photographic History of the Civil War (reprinted by the Blue and Gray Press). Written at Camp Douglas.

These were old steamers that were skuttled by the Confederates to obstruct passage. The top halves of the paddle wheels and other parts of the vessels visible above the water.
