Explains the course of travel that brought him to Goldsboro, North Carolina and his expectation to head to the front. Comments that "this Rebellion is about played out they are in our grasp. Lee has surrendered and Johnson is hemed in...Richmond is ours." Also comments on his quarters, the recent capture of twenty men by guerillas, and his pay.

Typed caption on verso reads: "Southwest view of Andersonville Prison, Ga., photographed from the Branch in summer of 1864. Sink or trough in the foreground, and further on are ragged tents, in an out of which are prisoners. Clothing is thrown over their tents. The dark spot in the centre is a hole or well dug by prisoners while attempting to escape by tunnelling. In this distance is the Stockade, with sentry stands and sentries, also the "Sentinel Tree," outside, on the left."
