Colonel Scammon writes to Hayes, Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Ohio regiment asking when he can expect help from Confederate General Alfred Beckley on compiling maps. Stresses the importance of good maps and mentions that "General F." (Confederate General John B. Floyd) "believes in good maps." Year inferred from content and military ranks. Beckley (1892-1888) served the Confederacy as a brigadier general in the Virginia militia. "Ammunition, Tents & 10 days rations for men & horses will be ready. Make no unusual bustle. The order was sent in Cypher. So mum." Reports that the brigade will move to Flat Top and Princeton, Virginia and will scout Logan, Monroe and Mercer Counties. Asks him if he can learn something about a road opening to Logan Court House. Artillery recruitment broadside for the 7th Rhode Island Artillery. Dominated by a striking, crisp image of an eagle with a banner in its beak. The banner says "The Constitution Must Be Maintained." Says the artillery is the "Right Arm of the Government." Pandering to the laziness in human nature, the broadside says "In marches, the private soldier may usually ride or walk, according to his choice, and is not cumbered with heavy arms and accoutrements. Letter to his wife discussing camp life and military operations during the Peninsula campaign. Weather very hot, so he let the men break from drilling to rest. One thousand men constructing a military road. Relates a story of a rifle accidentally being fired in camp, but no one being injured. The two armies entrenched on opposite sides of Warwick Creek, occasionally skirmishing, with "tremendous cannonading" all around. "The siege progresses slowly but as fast as possible." Written at Warwick Courthouse. Crocker was taken prisoner two days later at Yorktown.
