Addressed to "C.W. Hear." Acknowledges receipt of a notice to vacate a lot he had leased from William Bingham and agrees to vacate the property by May 1, 1806. American inventor Oliver Evans is credited with inventing the first high-pressure steam engine as well as other steam-driven machines. Bingham, former Continental Congressman and U.S. senator, had died the previous year. Hare was Bingham's nephew and lawyer.

States that after a delay by the Treasury Department, he has obtained an order requiring "the district attorney to attend to the taking of the depositions" regarding the loss of money on board a steamboat. An audit by Mr. Elliott may resolve the matter without further action by Congress, but should a law be necessary, Gordon should forward "the depositions as soon as practicable." William Rufus de Vane King was a former representative from North Carolina, sitting senator from Alabama, and future (short-lived) vice president of the United States under Franklin Pierce.

Legal brief in the suit of Jones, surviving partner of Farrell and Jones, of Great Britain, against Thomas Walker, Defendant, in debt on bond before the Federal Circuit Court, Richmond, Va. Entirely in the hand of Edmund Pendleton. Probably 1791. One of the greatest post-war problems in Virginia was the settlement of pre-war debts with English merchants, required by the Treaty of Peace, but virtually impossible in the inflation-ridden, cash poor economy of post-war Virginia. A circular letter signed by Secretary of the Treasury Gallatin and sent to Dudley Hobart, the collector of Bath, Maine. Instructs Hobart to enforce the amendment to the fourth section of the March 3, 1805 act, which empowered the president "to permit or interdict, at pleasure" any armed vessels from foreign nations entering America's ports and required all such vessels to submit a report outlining the reason for their arrival.
