Horace B. Gardner writes to Nellie Boardman. Responding to her suggestion that a draft may be required to fill the Massachusetts quota, he discusses the value of fighting in defense of his country and her laws. Gardner writes of the 14th Regiment's potential move to Richmond, and of his kind Captain and Lieutenant. He discusses the food available to the soldiers and explains that farmers come to camp to trade milk for bread.
