Townsend states that Badeau will report to General Thomas Sherman, from whose staff he has not been properly relieved.

A salt print of a photograph taken of the Long Bridge in Washington, D.C. circa 1862. The camera is facing nearly due south. The picture must have been taken before 1864 when a second bridge was completed shortly downriver, as it is not present in the photograph. As of 2017, the route of the Long Bridge is now part of the 14th St. bridge complex. The second line of a small sign in the middle of the image appears to read "Signal Corps." A road and a long horse rail [fence] are in the foreground of the image, while what appears to be an orchard stands in the background. Graphite inscription on verso: "Def[enses] of Wash[ington]. Gardner XXX 732." Print is unmounted. The US Army Signal Corps was established on March 3rd, 1863 so the photograph has to date from after that.

A print of a photograph of the Washington, DC headquarters of Brigadier General Hardin. Brigadier General Martin D. Hardin put was in command ofthe defenses of Washington from 1864 to the end of the war. He is just left of the tree on the corner, missing the left arm he lost in Confederate guerrilla ambush. The glass of the lamp post on the corner reads "19th Street West." The headquarters was located at the intersection of 19th St. NW and Pennsylvania Ave. The crowd consists mainly of well dressed civilian men and women with a few soldiers.
